Pressured and guilted by irresponsible parents into believing their every longing and failure is sin, the adolescents in Spring Awakening struggle with their sexual identities and curiosity. When Melchior, the only one whose parents have been honest with him, tries to educate his friends, horrible consequences ensue. After his best friend Moritz commits suicide, Melchior is sent to a correctional institution, and escapes only to learn that Wendla has died giving birth to his child. On the verge of taking his own life, Wendla and Moritz' spirits appear to him and give him new hope.

Role
Ilse is a childhood friend of Moritz, Melchior and Wendla, who ran away to an artists' colony to escape her abusive parents. She is a free-spirit, hopeful and childish, is much deeper than she'd let anyone believe. She's seen a lot of darkness, but can still see the potential for good in a world gone bad. She leaves the artists colony after an artist she admires threatens her life in a moment of drunkeness. With no where to go, she puts all her faith in her old friend Moritz, with whom she shares a mutual attraction, hoping he'll save her - but he is facing his own turmoil and can't let her in. Their missed connection is the final straw for Moritz, who takes his own life only moments after pushing her away.
